Episode 91 – Brand New Year, Same Verbose Girllls

Laura is  knitting Hitchhiker by Matina Behm on size 4 (3.5 mm) needles out of Cloudlover SAL/KAL fiber in the Hounted Vineyard Colorway.  She has also cast on an Abbi Shawl Color Cardigan by Elizabeth Smith in Vintage Chunky in the 5175 colorway.  She is using size 11 (8.0 mm) and 10 (6.0) needles.

Leslie is knitting  some Single Malt Woolmeise 100% for the Make a Wish socks. She is using the pattern, Bavarian Cables, by Wendy Johnson.  She is using size 1 needles.  She has also cast on Pole out of Berroco Boboli on size 9 (5.5mm).

Laura has finished a pair of plain socks using the Wendy Johnson toe-up heel with gusset method out of Vesper in the, “In the Wildwood” colorway.  She has also finished a Ruche Beret by Susan B. Anderson out of Tosh Sport in the Vanilla Bean colorway.  She knit this on size 7 (4.5 mm) needles from the top down and is a little in love with it.  Picnik is an awesome photo editing site.

Leslie has finished an awesome quilt for Laura!!!!!!!!

Debrox is what finally fixed my ear.

Leslie is spinning a Perfect Union in the Tempted Fiber Arts Cashmere blend.  She got a total of 301 yards from the main skein.

Laura is spinning on all three wheels.   She just finished some merino (around 150 yards) on the Lendrum and a Loop batt on the bug and the kick.  The ladybug is going to get  Loop batt  from her second shipment of the club.  The Sidekick has  Pigeon Roof Studios batt in Faery.  The Lendrum has All Spun Up Polwarth in M2075 colorway.

I would say my favorite colorway is the Patina… but I’m on a green kick these days. Ask me next week and I might say candied apple!

  2. herbalsheila says:

Love that colorway of Visions of Sugarplums of BFL swirl wool roving. I hunted around on her Etsy shop and I thought that was my favorite one and was neck and neck with Grimace swirl BFL roving. Both of those are my kind of colors! Nummy!

  3. Susan Hardy says:

Hi girls, Great episode again. I love the patchwork quilt Leslie, Laura your so lucky to have one gifted. I wish I could afford to donate to your video casts but times are so difficult now. Is there anything from the UK you would like me to send to you that could be used as a giveaway? Please let me know because I want to send my appreciation of the time, money and effort you girls put in. Send me some ideas please, I’ll even put some Cadbury Chocolate in the post as well.

I really enjoy your podcast. The quilt is amazing.

  41. Tara Wurster says:

i ove the totally turq color way. cant wait to see what next week brings grillls!!

  42. Tara says:

Oh how I love your show, thank you for all you two put into it each and every week! I thought the book you reviewed was so beautiful that I put it in my shopping cart (knit picks) before the show even ended.

As for goals for 2012, I haven’t written any down yet. But I did read something today that stuck with me – coming up with a theme for each month. I think that is so interesting and a wonderful way to explore the many different ways to fulfill that theme. My first theme is baking and cooking. I have nearly as many cookbooks as I do knitting books, and I want to use them more often than I do right now. Right in line with the goal to knit or spin from book each month, right Laura?!?

  43. Mandy says:

I love the Unwind Yarn’s Velvet Elvis colorway. It’s a great color with a fun name.

    Beautiful blanket Leslie! Great job!

  44. Ruthie says:

If you are gonna be more gentle with yourselves, then don’t apologize for the length of your podcast! You have a lot to say and you are so much fun to watch/listen to. I have missed your weekly missives and am glad you are back safe and sound.

On the subject of that BFL fiber, the sugarplum colorway is AWESOME!! I’m a pink freak and those colors would go with anything else I have. Hmmm…any way to rig the contest?? LOL

  45. Kate says:

You guys are the best (worst) enablers! I’m not currently spinning but still want to buy Patina the most!

Looking forward to enjoying 2012 with you two.

  46. Kate says:

I enjoy the rambly episodes, you don’t need to edit yourselves for me. I’m sitting here at 4:30 in the morning knitting away and it’s great to have some company. Working nights makes one a night owl, doncha know…
The sugarplum color way is really darling – would make something nice for a young girl like my niece. Definitely like your goal setting ideas – I tend to buy enough fiber to spin for a sweater and have yet to actually knit the sweater. I have woven things with it tho – so that counts. You two aren’t far from weaving – once you get spinning and realize you can’t knit up all this yarn – the weaving thing starts. But I’m setting a goal right now to get a sweater’s worth spun up and knit into a sweater.
I was just thinking today before I realized you had an episode up that you are so very generous with your time and energy to do these podcasts every single week, and how hard that has to be to have all that together week in and week out. A week goes by so fast. As much as I look forward to Sunday or Monday – if you have to give yourselves a longer period in between so you don’t get burned out and feel like the rest of your lives are being neglected then maybe set up a schedule for twice a month and if things work out better, do another podcast in between. Especially if we’re all spinning a particular type of fiber, then maybe just a short update on the fiber spinning and then a full episode? Something like that maybe. Just an idea – but again thank you both for all the energy, enthusiasm and great comradarie. I hope we meet up some time. St. Louis has great yarn shops, BTW and in the summer it’s as hot and humid as Mississippi or so I’m told.

  47. Ausifer says:

I like the sugared violet the best. Happy new year and I hope you will continue having fun making these podcasts.

  48. Ashley says:

That quilt just might be the most awesome thing I have ever seen. Wow, just wow!

I think a “no crafting night” is a great idea. It made me think of something I read or heard about music. That it’s the rests, or silence, that make music beautiful. Because without the rests, it becomes a bunch of noise.

So, my favorite of Dana’s fiber…sugared violets. And, yeah, I’m totally being a contest whore entering a giveaway for fiber when I don’t spin, BUT, 1) I never win and 2) one of my friends could spin it into pretty yarn for me. There, inner guilt quieted!

  49. Melody says:

My favorite right now in Dana’s shop is the Patina Polwarth (and I just might nab myself a bump of it too). Laura’s blanket is epically adorable. I’ve been kinda wanting to make myself a quilt lately and you may have just been the last push I needed to enable me to do so. I love the idea of quilting words ! Loved the episode and the goals for the New Year too.

  50. claude st-cerny says:

  60. Heather says:

Please, please, please don’t edit your show to be smaller. I look forward to your podcast every week. I would watch it even if it were 2+ hours!
Leslie, that quilt is amazing! I’ve always said I was going to make a quilt. Maybe that should be one of my 2012 goals?
Laura, your spinning blows me away. I have to say, I’m a bit jealous of the three wheels. Hopefully, all of my hints for a wheel for my anniversary hasn’t went on deaf ears. lol

My favorite colorway would have to be Patina. I don’t have much green in my stash, but that just may find it’s way in.

  61. syd says:

    Strawberry Swing – gorgeous!

  62. Karen V says:

Great show, again. Of the colorways Dana offers, I really like the Chianti journey sock yarn and the mardi gras thick and thin hand spun. Lovely, lovely.

  63. Netta S says:

Love you guys. I anxiously await every episode. The quilt was amazing. What a perfect token of your close friendship. As far as color goes…..it is candied apple for me. All the best in 2012!

  69. Leena says:

Thanks for an another great episode!

My friend recommended your podcast to me (I think it was at the end of october) and watching you is what helped me through my last minute christmas gift knitting panic (THIS year I will start early. Really, I will!) . Sadly, I have now caugth up and will have to settle to one episode a week . I hope you keep on doing this for a long time.

Ahh, I love your long episodes! Don’t even think about changing :)

I’m REALLY trying to be good and not buy any yarn/fiber, but that Grimace is so pretty…

  75. Tracy Kipper says:

Oh my……my favorite video podcast is featuring a giveaway from my favorite audio podcast! I think I’ve died and gone to heaven! You both are truly gifted with your crafty talents. Thanks for such an awesome podcast. I look forward to each and every episode! Laura – Thanks a Lot – I’ve sworn off buying books and right now the Weekend Hats is on it way thanks to you and your Ruche Hat. By the way it’s on sale on Amazon for $15.xx.

  99. Gerry says:

Enjoyed your thoughts for 2012 – setting goals is the way I get things accomplished and to stretch my skills,
I’ve learned over the years that applying numbers doesn’t always get that accomplished. I like working as it comes.

Unwind Yarn’s Vapor colorway is just my speed.

Thanks for expanding my fiber-related world.

  100. Melissa says:

There were three that I love more than the others and I just couldn’t narrow it down more than that. They are, Chianti, Patina and Ultramarine. I’m definitely going to add her stuff to my gift wish list!

  102. Tina says:

I love the Malachite Handdyed Twinkle Sock Yarn!

  103. southparknitter says:

I’ve had major leftovers the last few projects I made. I always buy one extra but now seem to have 2 or 3 whole skeins left. As one who works at yarn shop, I’d rather designers “lie” that put actual yardage and have a knitter buy exact amount and run out and have to use different lot.

  104. SarahMM says:

I really love the Patina colorway. Beautiful!

  105. Rebekah Hodges says:

I really love the Terra Nova colourway, reminds me both of forests and one of my fave shows at the moment.

  111. jayne chouinard says:

    my favorite colorway is kaleidoscope!

Thank you for introducing another great shop on Etsy, her yarns are just gorgeous especially I love the “Purple Palace Dark Handdyed Weekend Sock” and as I love purples very much, so it seems that “Kaleidoscope 33 soft and smooth drumcarded fiber batt for spinning or felting- 1.7oz” would be just a dream to spin.

  133. Michelle says:

question… who makes sthe cute little project bags that you use? I am not sure of the spelling and have been searching on etsy… piddaloop?
    thanks ;)

  134. Maryse says:

I really do like your podcast! As you see, I’m a little late and have to catch up, but I will! You’re almost at 100 episodes! Wow! I like your new year’s goals! Happy New Year 2012!
